How being struck by lightning saved us a fortune!

By

Things happen for a reason.

I love to travel and in doing so have made many friends all over the world who I like to keep in touch with.  Also the family has dispersed in all directions so the phone is essential for keeping in touch.  Yes we have emails and Facebook but you can’t beat talking!

My husband’s business is internet based and he has clients worldwide whom he has to speak to on a very regular basis and sometimes for hours on end (yes I am serious, I am not exaggerating!).

So you can imagine the dread when the phone bill landed on the doormat every quarter.

Then we had a bizarre happening!  It was a very stormy night with wind, rain, thunder and lightning.  We were snuggled in bed drifting off to sleep when there was a loud thunder clap and crash; to the extent that we were virtually thrown out of bed!  The lightning had hit the house; in fact the electric meter box had taken a direct hit.

It took everything out including the phone – our lifeline.

The electric was soon re-established but the phone took much longer and we had to find an alternative in the meantime, not just to keep in touch with the family, but also for the business.

We had our mobile phones and use international SIM cards to help reduce costs on those when traveling however with the length of some calls that was not really an option.

A friend then suggested we had a look at Skype, so we did and have no regrets.  In fact we cancelled the landline and saved even more money by not having the standing charges – and another plus is no nuisance sales calls!

Hope you find this helpful.
